Woman gets 12 years for running over ex-boyfriend

The woman who ran over her ex-boyfriend with her SUV and left him in the roadway will spend 12 years in prison following her guilty plea Monday.

Vanessa Marie Garrett-Rogers, 28, of Hiram, will serve the remainder of her 30-year-sentence on probation and must pay the victim nearly $58,000, the Douglas County District Attorney said in emailed release.

Garrett-Rogers pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident for the July 2010 incident. Garrett-Rogers struck the victim, whose name was not released, at Pinebrook Mobile Homes hours after he ended the couple’s relationship, Assistant District Attorney Tom Kegley told the court.

Witnesses said Garrett-Rogers struck the victim, dragged him under her vehicle, and backed over him before fleeing the scene. The victim laid motionless on the ground until investigators arrived and transported him to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a dislocated pelvis and a fractured femur, along with injuries to his skull and hands.

Police found the Toyota 4Runner belonging to Garrett-Rogers the following day in her father’s garage, the district attorney’s office said. The significant damage to the front end of the SUV was consistent with evidence of striking a person.
