Veteran reggae and dancehall artiste Barrington Levy has been hospitalized. Levy was admitted to a private medical institution last Thursday, and is undergoing treatment for dengue fever with no word from doctors as to when he will be discharged.
According to Daddy Biggs, CEO of Platinum Camp Records, to which Levy is signed, the disease has taken a toll on the 51-year-old artiste.
"He said he's hanging in there. He's a little bit freaked out about being in a hospital because it's his first time," Biggs said.
Scheduled performance
As a result of his illness, the Broader Than Broadway hitmaker missed two major shows on Junior Gong's Catch A Fire Tour in the United States. He apologised for his absence via a Facebook status on Saturday, noting that he has no choice but to take care of his health.
Levy's next scheduled performance is October 3 in Trinidad at a show titled 'Unplugged', which will feature other top acts such as Shabba Ranks, Maxi Priest and Mad Cobra. However, his management team is playing the waiting game to see if it is possible.
Biggs said they are awaiting some blood test results which will help doctors determine when the Living Dangerously singer can be discharged. He said previous results have been showing abnormally low white blood cell counts (characteristic of dengue fever) and all they can do is hope and pray.
"Platinum Camp Records is asking Barrington's fans and family to remember him in their prayers. He is among the last of the great reggae icons from way back so we need to hold on and cherish him," Biggs said.
