Man kicked by Orlando police on camera charged with battery on an officer

Noel Carter charged with battery after police beating

Noel Carter, the South Florida bank employee who was repeatedly kicked, hit with a metal baton, shocked with a stun gun and blasted with pepper spray by Orlando police, has been formally charged in the incident, officials announced Friday.

Prosecutors confirmed that Carter has been charged with battery on a law-enforcement officer, resisting an officer with and without violence and misdemeanor battery.

Carter, 30, was arrested June 4 by Orlando police Officers Charles Mays and David Cruz. Cellphone video of Carter being kicked at least six times as he sat on a curb at Orange Avenue and Concord Street led to outrage and calls for the resignations of both officers and Chief John Mina.

Mina asked the public to be patient as the Orlando Police Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigate their actions. Those investigations are ongoing. Carter pleaded not guilty to the charges.

"We were hopeful that the charges would be dropped," said Natalie Jackson, Carter's attroney. "Every case of police brutality in Central Florida, even the ones caught on film, the victim has been charged with a crime. What kind of justice is that?"
