After many months of investigation, led by Les Levine, I am in a position to provide the following update on the inquiry into Darrell "Chris" Lighty’s death.
After hours of interviews, the review of many documents and other investigatory means our findings have left many important and material questions that still need to be answered.
The main problem that we encountered was that the NYPD did not do a thorough investigation into Chris’ death. In fact, what they did do was cursory, at best.
First, the Medical Examiner’s office never tested Chris’ hands nor any of his clothes for gun shot residue. This is a simple test that can be done in hours. Luckily, records indicate that an actual sample was taken for this purpose, but it was never tested. For months we have requested that the sample be tested and even offered to pay any costs relating to the testing, but our offer was ignored. The sample still sits in the office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Second, the gun recovered at the scene was traced as part of a multi-gun purchase in North Carolina. The weapon was never reported stolen. Despite this fact, no follow up was done with this information nor was the individual even interviewed. More importantly, no DNA tests were done on the gun.
These are only a few of the open issues that our investigation has uncovered. There is much more that needs to be done.

Purposely, I have been careful not to discuss specific witness statements or other details publically as not to prejudice the investigation.
We invite and urge the Bronx County District Attorney’s office to take this information seriously and open a formal investigation into Mr. Lighty’s death. I have met with a veteran prosecutor in District Attorney’s office to discuss this matter and hope for their continued cooperation in our search for the truth.

JESSICA BROOKS, Darrell “Chris” Lighty’s mother states:
Since my son’s death last August, my family and I have been searching for answers to what really happened to my son and to date, none of the explanations given make sense.
Our investigation has been stalled. Dr. Baden who was retained to do an independent autopsy has been unable to complete his task due to the lack of cooperation from the Medical Examiner’s office. He was brought in to help determine if Darrell’s death was a homicide or suicide. It is almost a year later and we still don’t have the answer.
Today, I am begging, Mr. Johnson, the Bronx District Attorney, to make my son’s death a priority and work with our investigator to really look into the facts and circumstances leading up to his untimely death. We have uncovered real information that needs to be followed up on by those in authority.

I am attaching a link to an online petition that we will forward to the DA’s office asking them to start a formal investigation. I am asking everyone interested in justice to please sign it. Thank you.
